When I was living in a cabin on the Oregon Coast in my early twenties — with a woodstove and no internet — I taught myself how to make shoes from scratch with the help of a 1970s book on the subject. The most fun moment was when I realized I could carve the Vibram soling material with my X-acto – and customize my shoe prints! When I walked on dirt paths or along the beach, I left a trail behind me that said “Make a new world.” When I re-soled my shoes a few years later, I carved “is this” and “the way” on the two shoes, which simultaneously say “is this the way” and “the way is this” when I walk.
